Using the Shopify Vendor Field to Speed Up Picking
The Shopify vendor field is one of the most useful bits of product data most stores never fully use. It quietly records who supplies or makes each product, and once it's filled in cleanly it becomes a lever for faster fulfillment: you can sort by it, filter by it, report on it, and — most usefully for anyone picking in-house — group your pick sheet by it so everything from one supplier is pulled together. This guide explains exactly what the field is, how to fill it in without creating a mess, and how to turn it into a picking shortcut. It comes from the team behind Picksort, a read-only Shopify pick & pack app.
What the Shopify vendor field actually is
Every product in Shopify has a Vendor value, set in the Product organization section of the product page. It's a single free-text field meant to hold the name of the brand, manufacturer, or supplier behind that product. A few behaviors are worth knowing:
- One vendor per product. Each product carries exactly one vendor value — there's no built-in list of multiple suppliers on the product itself.
- It defaults to your store name. If you never set a vendor, Shopify fills the field with your store's name, which is why many stores see their own name everywhere until they clean it up.
- It's filterable and reportable. You can sort and filter the Products list by vendor and use the value in custom reports, which makes it handy well beyond picking.
Because the vendor lives on the product, every order line for that product inherits the vendor automatically. That's the key fact that makes it useful at the picking stage — you tag the product once, and every future order "knows" its supplier for free.
Why vendor grouping speeds up picking
In a lot of small warehouses and stockrooms, products from the same supplier end up shelved together — either because they arrived in the same delivery, or because it's simply how the space grew. When that's true, grouping the day's picking by vendor means you walk to one area, pull everything you need from that supplier, and move on, instead of criss-crossing the floor product by product.
Vendor grouping is one of three natural ways to organize a pick run, alongside grouping by SKU and by bin location. Each suits a different layout, and the best choice depends on how your shelves are arranged. For the full comparison, see how to group Shopify orders by SKU, vendor, or bin. If your shelves are numbered rather than supplier-organized, bin grouping may beat vendor grouping — that's covered in our guide to Shopify bin locations.
How to fill in the vendor field cleanly
The field only helps if the values are consistent. "Acme", "Acme Co.", and "acme co" are three different vendors to Shopify, and they'll split into three groups on any report or pick sheet. Keep it tidy with a few habits:
Pick one spelling and stick to it
Decide on a canonical name per supplier — usually the shortest clear version — and use it everywhere. Write your conventions down so anyone adding products follows the same rules.
Edit in bulk instead of one at a time
To fix or set vendors across many products, don't open each product page. On the Products page you can select multiple products and use the bulk editor to add a Vendor column and set values in a spreadsheet-style grid. For larger cleanups, export a CSV, fix the Vendor column in a spreadsheet, and re-import. Bulk editing is by far the fastest way to standardize names.
Audit with a filter
Every so often, filter or sort your Products list by vendor and scan for near-duplicates or blanks. A five-minute audit keeps your grouping accurate as the catalog grows. For a broader take on getting products picking-ready, read how to organize Shopify inventory for picking.
Vendor field vs. Shopify's supplier concept
It's easy to confuse the product vendor field with "suppliers." They're related but not the same:
| Vendor field (on the product) | Suppliers (Stocky) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it lives | Product organization section, on every product | Inside the Stocky inventory app |
| How many per product | One value per product | Multiple suppliers per product |
| Main use | Sorting, filtering, reporting, and grouping pick lists | Purchase orders and restocking |
| Setup needed | None beyond typing the name | Suppliers created manually in Stocky |
For purchasing and reordering, Stocky's richer supplier model earns its keep. But for the everyday job of picking and packing today's orders, the plain vendor field is usually all you need — and it's already sitting on every product.
Turning the vendor field into a merged pick sheet
Here's where the field pays off at fulfillment time. On its own, the vendor value just sits on products and orders. To act on it, you want your open orders merged so each SKU appears once with a running total, and then grouped by vendor so the sheet follows your shelves.
That's exactly what Picksort does. It reads your open, unfulfilled Shopify orders and combines them into one quantity-per-SKU pick sheet, and you can flip the grouping between vendor, bin location, or SKU with the totals re-tallying instantly. Group by vendor and the sheet lists every supplier's items together — pick that shelf once, check off the boxes, and move to the next. It's read-only, so it only reads your orders and products and can't change anything, and there's no setup: the vendor values you already maintain simply flow into the grouping. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the vendor field in Shopify?
The vendor field is a product attribute that records who supplies or makes a product. You set it in the Product organization section of each product page. If you leave it blank, Shopify defaults it to your store name. You can use the vendor value to sort and filter your product list, build custom reports, and — with a pick app like Picksort — group your pick sheet by supplier.
How do I edit the vendor field in bulk?
Select multiple products on the Products page and use the bulk editor to add a Vendor column, or export a CSV, fill the Vendor column in a spreadsheet, and re-import it. Bulk editing is the fastest way to clean up inconsistent vendor names so grouping stays reliable.
Can I group my Shopify pick list by vendor?
Yes. Because the vendor lives on the product, any order line inherits it. Picksort reads your open, unfulfilled orders and groups the merged quantity-per-SKU pick sheet by vendor, bin, or SKU, so you can pick everything from one supplier's shelf in a single pass.
Is the vendor field the same as a supplier in Shopify?
Not exactly. The vendor field is a single free-text value on each product. Shopify's Stocky app has a separate Suppliers concept that supports multiple suppliers per product for purchasing. For picking and packing, the plain vendor field is usually all you need.
